Many claim that IPL-4 has lost its charm- one of the many reasons given is that the local players don’t play for their local teams any more. The key word here is local. If players had to play for their own regional teams then wasn’t the Ranji trophy good enough.
I wonder how many cricket fans that speak of these issues in IPL have actually thought about the reasons behind such few fans in stadiums for Ranji matches.
Going back to the time IPL was conceived by Lalit Modi (although I feel it was exactly his original idea and was just a bigger version of the now extinct ICL), it is pretty obvious that the concept originated out of the success that the English Premier League achieved as a league. Though as a game FOOTBALL is different and probably has a larger following in comparison to cricket, the format EPL followed is similar to what is followed in the IPL. EPL for the ones who don’t know has 20 teams that are owned by franchises or owners or whatever you want to call them.
My point here is not about the functioning based on the franchisee model. If closely noticed most of the teams in the EPL barely even have ENGLISHMEN let alone having players from the same locality as the club. Probably way back when the league was conceived they must have faced the same ‘identity crisis’ that IPL teams are facing. Coming back to present day status of the English Premier league, the teams hire the services of players all over the world irrespective of the region or locality they hail from, based on talent rather than regional preferences or the place from which the player represents.
What amazes me is the regional feelings that we Indians epitomize “my state”, “my region” that have made their way into the IPL too. Over the past few weeks most of us would have heard one coomon statement “there are no players from my state in the franchise that represents my state/city”
It is my strong opinion that the IPL will also emerge sooner or later into the same state where supporters will support their regional teams irrespective of the presence of the regional players in the squads. With time the followers of the game will realize that bringing good players to play for the franchise is as much a part of the game as the game in itself.
So go on support the team that you liked or your new found love, but be sure that your support doesn’t change every match.
Let’s GO RCB!!!
